This week, I was fortunate to be selected for a leadership development program at work. Before we even stepped into the training room, we were asked to take the CliftonStrengths assessment. Then we spent the better part of two days dissecting our results, understanding how our strengths show up in our daily lives, and learning that there is no single formula for success. Some people lead with strategy. Others with empathy. Some are relationship builders. Others are driven by competition, achievement, or discipline.
Naturally, my mind drifted to tennis.
Because if there’s one thing tennis fans love almost as much as tennis itself, it’s choosing sides. Roger or Rafa? Novak or everyone else? Sinner or Alcaraz? And the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if our favorite players say something about us, too.
Not in a scientific way, of course. More in the same way your favorite character on a television show probably reveals something about your personality.
So, consider this your completely unscientific tennis personality assessment.
If You Love Jannik Sinner

You probably appreciate competence.
Not flashy competence. Not loud competence. Just the quiet confidence that comes from showing up every day and doing the work.
Sinner rarely looks rattled. He doesn’t seek attention. He doesn’t celebrate every point like he just won Wimbledon (even though he has, several times). He simply puts his head down and relentlessly executes the task in front of him.
If Sinner is your guy, I suspect you’re the person everyone relies on when something important needs to get done. You value preparation, consistency, and results. You probably own a color-coded spreadsheet somewhere.
If You Love Roger Federer

You believe how something is done matters just as much as the outcome.
Federer fans aren’t just attracted to winning. They’re attracted to elegance. The effortless movement. The sportsmanship. The sense that excellence can look graceful rather than exhausting.
Federer supporters are often romantics. They appreciate artistry in all forms. They notice details. They care about aesthetics. And they probably have strong opinions about handwriting, customer service, and which wine glass should be used for which occasion.
If You Love Rafael Nadal

First of all, are you okay?
Because Nadal fans seem psychologically wired to believe that every challenge can be overcome with enough determination. Nadal never met a lost cause he didn’t think he could drag back to life through sheer force of will. Every point is a battle. Every match is a test of endurance.
If you’re drawn to Nadal, you’re probably resilient, loyal, and incredibly difficult to discourage. You’re the person who responds to setbacks by working harder. You likely view adversity as a personal invitation.
You are exhausting, but in the best possible way.
If You Love Carlos Alcaraz

You are here for joy.
Alcaraz plays tennis like a golden retriever who accidentally discovered he possesses world-class athletic ability. The drop shots. The sprints. The impossible gets. The smile.
Alcaraz fans tend to be optimists. They enjoy the process as much as the outcome. They like spontaneity, creativity, and possibility. They’re often the people suggesting last-minute road trips or signing up for activities they’ve never tried before.
Life is meant to be experienced, not managed.
If You Love Taylor Fritz

You respect efficiency.
No player on tour has squeezed more out of his toolkit than Fritz. While others are blessed with unlimited natural gifts, Fritz has quietly engineered himself into one of the world’s best players through preparation, tactical awareness, and an almost obsessive attention to detail.
If Fritz is your favorite, you’re probably analytical. You trust systems. You believe most problems have solutions if you’re willing to study them long enough.
You’re not trying to be the smartest person in the room. You just usually are.
If You Love Matteo Berrettini

You are a believer.
Berrettini has movie-star looks, a charismatic presence, and enough talent to make you think every tournament might finally be the one.
Being a Berrettini fan requires optimism because, historically speaking, there has often been heartbreak waiting around the corner. Injuries. Inconsistency. What-could-have-beens.
If you’re still riding with Matteo, you’re probably loyal to a fault. You see potential in people. You cheer for redemption stories. You believe everyone deserves another chance.
And honestly, the world could use more of that.
What Does It All Mean?
The funny thing about CliftonStrengths is that none of the strengths are right or wrong. They’re just different ways of moving through the world.
Tennis fandom is a little like that.
Some of us want Federer elegance. Some of us want Nadal grit. Some of us want Sinner’s relentless efficiency. Some of us just want to watch Alcaraz run through a wall and smile about it afterward.
The player you choose says less about tennis than it does about the traits you admire most in yourself, or maybe the ones you wish you had a little more of.
So tell me: Who’s your favorite player?
I’ll tell you who you are. Or at least pretend I can.
